Palestinian killed by Israeli artillery in northern Gaza: medics

A Palestinian civilian was killed Monday afternoon in an Israeli army artillery shelling on the outskirts of northern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medics said.

Adham Abu Selmeya, Gaza emergency spokesman told Xinhua that a Palestinian man was killed right after he was hit by the shrapnel of an Israeli army shell fired on northern Gaza Strip.

He said the body of the Palestinian whose identity is still unknown, was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital in northern Gaza Strip by Palestinian rescue crews.

The Israeli Radio quoted an Israeli army spokesman as saying that the Palestinian man was killed in an explosion.

The Israeli army had created four years ago a 300-meter-wide buffer zone along its borders with the Gaza Strip, claiming that it wanted to prevent homemade rockets attacks carried out from the area at southern Israel.
