Iranian lawmakers seek to impeach economy minister over financial fraud

Iranian lawmakers seek to impeach economy minister over financial fraud

Iranian lawmaker Nader Qazipour said Monday that 25 lawmakers have signed a motion to impeach Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Shamseddin Hosseini over the recent 2.6 billion U.S. dollars financial fraud case, the semi- official Mehr news agency reported.

The Iranian media recently reported that several Iranian banks were swindled out of nearly 2.6 billion U.S. dollars in more than two years by holding a company named Amir Mansour Aria. This scam is said to be one of the biggest frauds in the history of the Islamic Republic.

Qazipour told Mehr that the motion will be submitted to the Majlis (parliament) Presiding Board on Oct. 11.

So far, 25 lawmakers have signed the motion and some others will join the move, he was quoted a saying.

According to the report and on the basis of Iran's Constitution, the minister should appear in the parliament to answer lawmakers questions within 10 days after the Presiding Board of Majlis announces the receipt of the motion.

The lawmakers who seek the removal of Hosseini have referred to his failure to take measures necessary to prevent the fraud case and his incompetence in the management of the country's economic and banking affairs, said Qazipour.

Earlier this month, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei urged the judiciary to deal seriously with embezzlers.

Palestinian killed by Israeli artillery in northern Gaza: medics

Palestinian killed by Israeli artillery in northern Gaza: medics

A Palestinian civilian was killed Monday afternoon in an Israeli army artillery shelling on the outskirts of northern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medics said.

Adham Abu Selmeya, Gaza emergency spokesman told Xinhua that a Palestinian man was killed right after he was hit by the shrapnel of an Israeli army shell fired on northern Gaza Strip.

He said the body of the Palestinian whose identity is still unknown, was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital in northern Gaza Strip by Palestinian rescue crews.

The Israeli Radio quoted an Israeli army spokesman as saying that the Palestinian man was killed in an explosion.

The Israeli army had created four years ago a 300-meter-wide buffer zone along its borders with the Gaza Strip, claiming that it wanted to prevent homemade rockets attacks carried out from the area at southern Israel.

Hamas requires in-advance permission for foreigners to enter Gaza

Hamas requires in-advance permission for foreigners to enter Gaza

The de facto government of Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, on Monday demanded that any foreigner who wants to enter the coastal enclave should apply for an in-advance permission.

The Hamas ministry of interior said in a statement published on its website that the measures are applicable on all foreigners who want to visit or stay in the Gaza Strip.

"We call on all non-Palestinian foreigners who want to visit in the Gaza Strip to apply to the ministry for a permission one week before arriving," said the statement.

"The permission will be valid for one month after it is issued, " it said, adding that "those who want to stay in Gaza for more than one week have to refer to the foreign affairs and visa department."

The measures will go in force Tuesday, the ministry said, adding that "these measures were made to ensure the foreigners' stay in Gaza and facilitate their work."

"The role of foreign visitors to the Gaza Strip is so important to back the fair Palestinian cause on all social, economic and media levels and also to show the suffering of the residents due to five years of blockade," said the ministry.

Meanwhile, a Hamas press office said that regulations on foreign journalists' entry into the Gaza Strip will be detailed in another official statement to be issued later.

The regulations, the first such measures carried out by Hamas since it seized control of the Gaza Strip by force in June 2007, have been criticized by international journalist groups as restrictions on journalists.

PNA calls for AL emergency meeting on prisoners' hunger strike

PNA calls for AL emergency meeting on prisoners' hunger strike

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Monday called on the Arab League (AL) to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the hunger strike of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The Palestinian official news agency "Wafa" reported that the PNA handed a memorandum to the AL headquarters in Cairo, asking for an emergency meeting to discuss the Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike.

"The memorandum aims at discussing the living conditions of around 6,000 Palestinian and Arab prisoners in Israeli jails amid the Israeli oppressive assault on them, a reason that urged them to go for a hunger strike," said Wafa.

The news agency quoted an Arab diplomat as saying that AL probably will convene by the end of this week to discuss the prisoners' issue, adding that the PNA's request "is part of the Arab-Palestinian coordination."

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Monday asked its representative in the United Nations Reyad Mansour to bring the prisoners' issue to the UN Security Council.

The Palestinian and Arab prisoners went on a gradual hunger strike two weeks ago in 25 Israeli prisons, in protest of the tightened measures imposed by the Israeli prisons authorities on their living conditions.
